Get into your right (or left) mind

We’ve all met those people who play through life, believing everything is a synchronicity. The old acquaintance they bumped into yesterday lead to a group gathering that introduced them to their next big career shift. Everything was meant to happen this way, they were always destined for greatness, it just had to come in its own time.

We’ve all met those OTHER people who schedule life, creating a specific routine. They’ve planned meeting up with their old acquaintance to discuss a new business venture, leaving an extra 30 minutes of buffer time to talk and account for traffic. The career shift they’ve been planning has been in the works day by day for the past 3 years, each piece slowly coming into place as they practice the same week-to-week program. They created their greatness.

“How can they do the same thing over and over again?”, the right-brainers wonder. Just because left-brained planners are good at doing it one way doesn’t mean it’s the best way. We explore many options to eventually settle on the right one.

“How do they function?”, we left-brainers call in response. Right-brained free-spirits never get anything done, drawing lines connecting non-existent dots, having no organization.

Here’s the secret- we’re neither left nor right brained. Everybody’s a blend of both.

It’s true, though, that one side tends to win more often. When you’re stuck on a project, a conversation, or even what clothes to wear for the day, a sure-fire way to snap out of it is to flip to your other mode of being.

If you’re stuck in your left-mind:
  • Stand up and sing for 120 seconds. If you don’t sing, speaking gibberish works, too.
  • Put some music on and dance form 120 seconds or more. It doesn’t matter what it looks like. Really. Do the Douggie. We know you know it.
  • Find a blank piece of paper (no lines!). Set a timer for 3 minutes. Doodle away.
If you’re stuck in your right-mind:
  • On a lined piece of paper, list 5 things you want to complete this week.
  • Write out your multiplication tables. Remember those?
  • List what you’ve eaten for lunch the past 5 days.
But really, when it gets down to it, we think the best way to choose anything is to live simply.

Did any of these work for you? Have any other ideas about how to shift your thinking when you get stuck in a rut? Let us know!
