If Not Today, Then When?

While in my yoga training, my teachers used to say it all the time, “If not today, then when?” That phrase didn’t hit home for me until recently, when a few things in my life seemed out of control, or at least, out of the control I was used to.  That was then this phrase popped into my head. I could wait around and see what the world throws at me, or I can take back control. I know this all seems abstract and vague, but I promise I have a point.

My dog is undergoing surgery in a few days, and I’ve been thinking about all the things he has yet to experience. I made a promise to him that if all goes well, once he is fully recovered we will go hiking, run along the beach, and take longer, more leisurely walks. This train of thought began to diverge after a bit and I started to think about my own life and the things I want. I’ve never made a bucket list; I never thought I needed one. After taking some time to reflect on all that I’ve accomplished, I’ve decided that I did have a bucket list- I just never saw it as one.  Below are a few things that I’ve been able to cross off my list, and a few that I recently added to it.

Accomplished:

- Live in Hoboken

- Adopt a dog

- Become a yoga teacher

- Drive an Acura

- Marry a fantastic man
Still Working On…

- Hanumanasana

- Handstand

- Adopt a second dog

-Work from home on a full time basis

-Meditate daily
Do you keep track of your accomplishments? Big or small, each one is important and should make you proud.

It common for us yogis to track our asana progress. We love the journey, just as much as the end goal. It’s the progress that I’ve experienced in that past that keeps me going when things get hard. I know that when I look back at the past, the journey was always worth it. It’s the same in my life off the mat as well – looking at back at where I started and reviewing the path to success keeps me going when times are tough.  When I’m not sure what my goal is, or what the meaning of a situation is, I keep going on the journey, because I know it will take me to where I need to be. Keep your eye on the prize, keep believing it will happen, and one day you’ll find yourself exactly where you need to be.
