The Key to Healthy Eating

The trick to healthy eating? Meal prep. If you cook your own meals you know exactly what is going into them and then you can manage your portions, eat what you like and spend less money eating out.

The reason most of us don’t do it? It takes time and planning. But fear not—we’ll help you get started with this step by step guide:

  1. Schedule a time to cook
  2. Find simple recipes
  3. Make a shopping list
  4. Cook meals & ration out portions

 Easy enough. Let’s get started.

1. Schedule
Take a look at your calendar and find a block of time, about four hours, when you can set aside time to cook for the week. If possible, make this your weekly “meal prep” day so you can find a rhythm for your newest good habit. It may seem like a lot of time at first, and it is a commitment, but it will save you a ton of time and money later on.

2. Recipes
Hop on social media, Pinterest is especially good for recipes, and search food blogs to browse healthy, yummy and colorful meals for lunch and dinner. Find something that you can take to go for lunch and something you can warm up for dinner. My Spanish host mother always told me it’s important to eat at least one hot meal everyday, I agree.

3. Make a shopping list
Oh how rudimentary! Well, best to be prepared when you go grocery shopping so that you save time looking for what you need. You also won’t forget anything and you can keep your food cravings in check so they don’t override your plans. Focus people, let’s not eat boxed mac and cheese for dinner tonight.

4. Cook + Ration
Remember that time you set aside to cook your meals? Use it. Cook enough of each meal for 3-5 days, depending on how much variety you want. As you’re cooking, have tupperware set out so that you can build balanced meals as you go.

*Don’t forget to pack your meals and bring them with you. Having a little lunch box with an ice pack in your bag can make a huge difference.

Happy meal prepping hOMies!
