Letting Out Your Inner Child

Does anyone else ever feel like they need to act like a child as a way to prove to themselves they're an adult?

Like "Hey! Nobody tells me what to do! I'm gonna stay up all night and eat ice cream for breakfast and dance around the house blasting music because I CAN." Or is that just me?

I’m inclined to think I may not be the only one who has these days. And I think that our bodies, or the way that we treat our bodies, can be retaliating in just the same way as our minds.
I started thinking about this concept while working with one of my students this morning. She’s a beautiful, vibrant, skinny and strong woman and like a lot of us in New York, never stops moving. In class, she is one of the first to try an advanced posture-- she loves to play and challenge herself, but she talks about having difficulty quieting her mind...

Her inner child is active, and she can easily tap into it because it’s fun! There’s a certain amount of getting lost in the physicality of trying new things with vinyasa or flow yoga, that allows for this youthful creativity. And like a kid running around the playground, she had become worn out this morning after a challenging practice, and it was time for her yogic sleep (AKA yoga nidra).

Laying supine and sleepy, she was able to slow her mind as she was led through a visual meditation. She calmed her inner child and let her adult self resurface. Sometimes we need to let loose a little bit before we can become grounded, the checks and balances of it all.
