Why Wellness In the Workplace?

5/22/2018

Did you know that 31 million Americans experience low-back pain at some point in their lives?

Wellness in the workplace has often been looked at as a ‘nice to have.’ Perhaps a cool perk in the company culture.

More and more companies are catching on to the health research and cost benefits in investing in employees’ social, mental, and physical health.

The average employee spends 48,360 hours sitting at their desk at work over a 30 year career, which equates to five years of life!

The American Journal of Health Promotion has reported that workers who take part in a corporate wellness program have fewer hospital admissions, shorter hospital stays, and overall lower costs.
And to that point, an analysis done by Johnson & Johnson's leaders estimate that wellness programs have cumulatively saved the company $250 million on health care costs over the past decade; from 2002 to 2008, the return was about $2.71 for every dollar spent!
The term “workplace wellness” has been coined as an organized, employer-sponsored program that is designed to support employees as they adopt and sustain behaviors that:
  • Reduce health risks
  • Improve quality of life
  • Enhance personal effectiveness, and
  • Benefit the organization’s goals overall
Wellness in the workplace can be very different from company to company but generally it may include ergonomic assessment, yoga or meditation on site, nutritional coaching, joyful movement, social and community gatherings and events.
With so much time spent at the office these days, it’s important to incorporate healthy habits throughout the day such as good posture, eating well, and also feeling good physically and mentally!

We love talking corporate wellness!
